Join Waypoint Adventure for an exciting day of rock climbing at Den Rock in Lawrence, MA with middle and high school students! As a Waypoint volunteer, you will help provide a memorable and empowering experience for participants of all abilities.
Schedule:
- 9:00am: Volunteers arrive and get acquainted
- 9:15am: Assist Waypoint Adventure staff in setting up top rope climbs
- 9:45am: Review the group, participant profiles, and goals for the day
- 10:00am: Greet participants upon arrival
- 10:15am-10:45am: Help facilitate opening circle, safety briefing, and getting participants ready to climb
- 10:45am-12:00pm: Belay participants and provide encouragement during the climbing session
- 12:00pm-12:30pm: Enjoy lunch with the group and help facilitate the closing circle
- 12:30pm-1:00pm: Assist Waypoint Adventure staff in packing up climbing equipment
- 1:00pm: Debrief with staff and depart
What you'll do:
- Help set up and break down the top rope climbing area under Waypoint staff supervision
- Belay participants under the direction of Waypoint Adventure staff
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to climbers of all abilities
- Assist participants with putting on harnesses and helmets
- Engage with participants during opening/closing circles and lunch
- Potentially assist participants with physical transfers from wheelchair to climb site (with guidance from staff)
- Help ensure a safe and positive experience for all
What to bring:
- Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for being active outdoors
- Layers (fleece, rain jacket) for variable weather
- Lunch, snacks, and plenty of water for yourself
- A positive, can-do attitude and excitement to help others challenge themselves!
Waypoint Adventure will provide all technical climbing gear, ropes, helmets, and harnesses. Feel free to bring personal climbing gear if you have it. Your presence and support as a volunteer will enable participants to push their limits and experience the joys of climbing in a safe, inclusive environment.
