**IMPORTANT FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS: Before registering to volunteer on any Waypoint Adventure program, complete our general volunteer registration HERE. Then, you may review our program calendar and sign up to volunteer on specific programs.**
The Waypoint Outdoor Canoeing program gives access to some of the best ponds in the Boston area. Enjoy the fun and serenity of the water all while being part of a supportive and diverse community. Waypoint Adventure trip leaders specialize in leading accessible adventure education programs for youth and adults of all abilities. Your assistance on these programs help us to provide access to folks who may require physical, cognitive, or social emotional accommodations. As a volunteer on a canoe program, you may be asked to do the following (please note that the following are NOT the volunteer eligibility requirements. We are happy to tailor tasks to your skills and abilities as long as you meet our eligibility criteria!) :
Instructors: Rob (781) 205- 0736 and Mary ([email protected]; 781-325-7980) Please call or email the instructor or the Waypoint office if you are lost, late, or cancelling.
Location/Directions: Please us the 4 Woodland Road, Stoneham, MA 02180 (Spot Pond Boat House) as your address. Here is a GPS pin for the parking lot (see photo on registration page for what it looks like on a map). Look for Waypoint signs directing into the small parking lot/boathouse. Public transit will get you to the location, but all options will drop you off at 3 Woodland Road, which will then require a ~5 minute walk to the boathouse from there. From Boston University, public transit to Spot Pond Boathouse takes ~2 hours with multiple bus/train changes.
Parking will be limited as the boathouse gets very busy. If possible, we strongly encourage you to consider taking public transportation or getting dropped off on this date.
Conditions: Spot Pond is a large pond. Due to it's size and location near 93, there is chance of wind and noise of traffic. We will stay close to shore and will be paddling in a calmer section of the pond and will avoid the center of the pond. There is a chance of small waves/choppy water, but no to limited boat traffic. Also, the boat launch does has a steep grade to it, so transferring into a boat before the boat launch may be required. Waypoint staff will help/direct this process.
Bathrooms: There will be an accessible porta potty available.
