Waypoint Adventure trip-leaders specialize in leading accessible adventure-education programs for youth and adults of all abilities. A small group hike with one of our staff is the perfect way to try an activity for the first time or just get out into nature and experience the serenity of the trail, river, or lake. It's also a great opportunity to meet new friends and socialize. You’ll benefit from our selection of adaptive equipment, receive instruction to meet any learning style, and be encouraged to reach your individual goals.
Location: Mount Watatic
Instructor: Mary Kae
Description: Come experience a Boston area hiking classic with great reward! We'll ascend Mt. Watatic from Rt. 119 in Ashburnham, MA branching onto the Wapack Trail in .3 miles, reaching the summit at 1.1 miles after 650' elevation gain. On a clear day at the summit, you can see Boston's buildings and the surrounding Wapack Mountains including Pack Monadnock, North Pack, Wachusett Mountain, the Uncanoonucs, and even Mount Greylock. At the top, we'll take a group consensus to either turn around and go back te way we came, or continue 0.8 miles to Nutting Hill, an outcropping that connects to the Midstate Trail for a gentle 1.1 miles back. Total loop is 3.0 miles and about 900' elevation gain.
Conditions: The trail can be strenuous for some folks and filled with rocks, roots, and unleveled ground. Not accessible with off-road wheelchair. If it rains prior or during hike, trail may be muddy.
Bathrooms: There are no bathrooms on site/at trailhead, but there are bathrooms at establishments close to trail.
What to bring:
How to find us:
Rt. 119 trailhead in Ashburnham MA – Take I-495 South and MA 2 West to the Abbott Street Exist, which will take you to Rt. 119 West. (the next exist itself is also Rt 119W.) Rt 119 takes you through Fitchburg State College and a commercial district – look for a McDonald’s on your RIGHT, and consider stopping there for its bathrooms and a coffee or drink as a thank-you. There are no bathrooms located at the trail head. Continue on about 20 minutes and the trailhead is on your RIGHT, with a small sign. Look for 2012 Honda Odyssey mini-van with MA plates and the dings and road dirt that say “hiker car.” Leader provides a paper map to all attendees and brings gluten free snacks (usually home made).
